Social Activities
The ISS organizes a wide variety of social events throughout the summer, ranging from tours and hikes around Oslo to cultural evenings to movie nights. These events are meant to build community among peers and enrich student experiences beyond the classroom. While students themselves have the chance to organize their own programming through organized committees, the ISS staff also organize several events that are staples of the ISS experience each year. Below are four of the major events you can expect to attend:

Opening Ceremony
The student body is invited to Oslo City Hall, where they are officially welcomed by the University of Oslo Rector and a representative of the mayor’s office in Oslo, along with music and speeches.
Norwegian Night
Students are invited to learn more about Norwegian culture through presentations on traditional folk dancing, bunad clothing, and fairytales, with an assortment of Norwegian snacks provided.
International Night
Students get the chance to share aspects of their culture, usually through a potluck of traditional foods and a series of performances including songs, dancing, and trivia.
Farewell Celebration
Students, staff, and faculty all gather together one last time to share company, dance, and hear closing speeches from the ISS director and instructor and student representatives.
A Sampler of Other Activities
Guided museum tours
Pick-up sports and tournaments
Hiking in Nordmarka forest

The Lillehammer Excursion
On this day trip, students will get the chance to experience a piece of Norway beyond Oslo. Lillehammer is famed for its cultural significance and beautiful scenery, with an array of museums and hiking trails accessible right from the city. Students will get to choose from a wide selection of activities, including a scenic hike, an array of museum tours, and free time to explore the city. At the end of the day, the entire group gathers for a two-course meal at a restaurant in the city.
Scenic Hiking
Nestled among Lake Mjøsa, the Mesna River, and the surrounding hills, Lillehammer offers many hikes with striking views.
An Array of Museums
Some of the city’s most famous museums include the Lillehammer Art Museum, the Olympic Museum, and Maihaugen (Norway’s largest open-air museum).
Free Time in the City
Students can also choose to explore the city freely, with its walking paths, city parks, and charming shopping street, called Gågata.
