Frequently Asked Questions
How will my credits transfer back to my home university?
Because of the wide range of partner schools we work with across the US and Canada, we are unable to speak to each school’s transfer credit policy. We can provide official transcripts and confirmations of course attendance, but it is the student’s responsibility to know how their ISS course(s) will apply to their home degree.
How do I order my ISS transcript?
To request an official ISS transcript, simply email iss@stolaf.edu providing the name of the recipient/office and a street address. ISS transcripts can only be sent in physical copy, so we are not able to provide digital transcripts.
Our office only posts to individuals and institutions based in the United States or Canada. If you need your ISS transcript sent elsewhere, please refer to this page from our Oslo office website.
What is the grading system like at ISS?
The ISS generally follows the European grading model, wherein the majority or entirety of the student’s grade depends upon a final exam or assignment turned in at the end of the course. This system may be jarring for North American-based students who are used to more regular projects and assignments throughout the term. Students thrive best in this system when being proactive with self-guided study and reading.
If you are struggling with your course load, please consult with your course instructor. More details on grading procedures can be found here on our Oslo office website.
What does the meal plan look like?
Our accommodations at Rønningen provide three meals per day including weekends. These come in the form of a cold breakfast bar in the morning, a packed lunch bar at breakfast time, and a warm dinner in the evening. Our chefs take great care to accommodate dietary restrictions/observances as much as possible and are open to suggestions via the provided suggestion box.
*Note that Rønningen meals generally follow a standard Norwegian diet that consists primarily of bread, lunch meats, potatoes, greens, etc.
What should I pack for the program?
We will send a comprehensive list of packing items closer to your departure date. However, some of the essentials we recommend bringing include a European-style adapter, all necessary prescription medications, a laptop and other studying necessities, good walking shoes, rain gear, and clothes for a variety of temperatures. We also advise having all important travel documents on hand.
At Rønningen, you will receive bedding, a towel and washcloth, a packed-lunch container, and your travel card for Oslo public transport. In addition, you can check out a variety of items from reception, such as irons, hairdryers, and sports equipment.
Will I have my weekends free?
Weekends are generally free for students to fill as they would like. A variety of optional activities are offered regularly through the ISS, such as movie nights and hikes around Oslo. Prior students have also made trips to neighboring cities and countries, and we always recommend exploring Norway to the fullest during your time there.
Where are the nearest grocery stores?
There are many groceries stores in the Kjelsås area, several of which are within a 15-minute walk from Rønningen. The two nearest options are a Coop Prix on Midtoddveien and a SPAR on Myrerskogveien. For a wider variety of goods, many neighborhoods nearer the city center offer a greater selection, such as Storo and Grønland. Note that most grocery stores are closed on Sundays.
What kinds of social activities are offered?
With a team of specially focused activities leaders, ISS provides a range of events that run regularly throughout the summer. These activities had included local hikes and tours, movie nights, sports tournaments, crafts sessions, cultural nights (both Norwegian and international), as well as opening and farewell ceremonies. In addition, students have the chance to organize their own events with the support of ISS resources and guidance.
